Fishing in Lewis and Harris

There are over 1,000 freshwater lochs on the island of Lewis, the vast majority of which are home to our wild brown trout. Some contain numerous trout of only a few ounces in weight and others contain fish up to several pounds. The remaining lochs contain trout of between 250g and 750g. Fishing for brown trout is free on most of the lochs, but there are a few lochs set aside for estate owners and their guests. If in doubt, ask us for advice before you set out.

The season opens on 15th March and closes on 6th October.

Permits are generally required to fish for salmon and sea-trout - these are available from various sources and cost from around £10.00 for the day, the hire of a boat is extra. The Tourist board will be able to help you as they publish a leaflet "Angling in the Western Isles".

Cycling

Cycling around the isles of Lewis and Harris, the visitor is closer to the special ambience of the area. Travelling through the unspoilt landscapes, pausing at the white shell-sand beaches and machairs with their abundance of wild flowers, mesmerised by the mysterious magnetism of the stone circles, the cyclist senses the essence of the isles with the rich and vibrant Gaelic culture very much in evidence.
